Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, a new online encyclopedia intended as an alternative to Wikipedia, claiming it offers truth and freedom from ideological slant. However, Grokipedia has drawn swift criticism for frequently copying Wikipedia articles word-for-word, confirmed by numerous users and plagiarism checks. Most entries feature a disclaimer admitting adaptation from Wikipedia, justified under the site’s Creative Commons license.
Critics highlight Grokipedia’s lack of editorial transparency and its use of AI to fact-check and reframe content, often introducing right-leaning perspectives in contentious topics. Wikipedia’s human-led approach contrasts sharply with Grokipedia’s automated assembly of nearly 900,000 articles.
The Wikimedia Foundation commented that even Grokipedia relies on Wikipedia to exist, reinforcing Wikipedia’s role as an essential human knowledge source.
