Facebook’s AI Feature Scans Camera Roll

Łukasz Grochal

Meta has unveiled an optional Facebook feature that reviews private photos and videos stored on users' phones, aiming to propose creative edits such as collages, stylizing, and recaps for social sharing. After receiving consent, Meta’s systems upload media from the camera roll to its cloud, where AI analyzes content and presents suggestions directly to the user. Suggestions stay private unless the user decides to edit using Meta’s AI or posts the edited content to Facebook, at which point the images may be used to improve Meta’s algorithms. Meta claims that the uploaded camera roll content will not be used for ad targeting and that users retain full control to enable, disable, or revoke cloud access. The rollout began in the US and Canada, with global expansion planned soon.

Despite assurances, privacy advocates remain wary about the underlying implications of granting Meta wide-reaching access to personal media collections.
