Global Leaders Demand Ban on Superintelligent AI Progress

Łukasz Grochal

A coalition of over 800 public figures - including Nobel laureates, leading AI scientists, politicians, and celebrities has signed an open letter urging a ban on the development of superintelligent AI. The statement, coordinated by the Future of Life Institute, calls for a halt to such research until there is robust scientific consensus that these systems can be managed safely and strong public support for their development. Prominent signatories include Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Steve Wozniak, and Susan Rice.

The appeal emphasizes that superintelligence is not required for progress in medicine, autonomous vehicles, or productivity improvements. Recent surveys reveal that most Americans favor strict regulation and are concerned about unchecked AI growth potentially surpassing human capabilities.
