Is ChatGPT Making Us Dumber?

Łukasz Grochal

Experts warn that heavy reliance on AI tools like ChatGPT could gradually weaken human cognitive abilities. By outsourcing tasks such as writing, problem-solving, and even forming opinions, we risk reducing our mental effort and critical thinking. Over time, this could lead to a sort of intellectual complacency where users stop questioning or verifying information. Psychologists also note that frequent use of generative AI may rewire brain pathways tied to memory, reasoning, and creativity, since the brain adapts to habits that demand less cognitive strain.

There’s concern this might be especially pronounced in young people still developing key mental faculties. While AI can undeniably boost productivity, experts urge moderation, recommending that users stay engaged with challenging mental activities to preserve sharpness and independent thought.
