The "Dead Internet theory" phenomenon is no longer a mere conspiracy theory but increasingly seen as a present reality where bots generate the majority of online content and traffic. Recent studies indicate that over 51% of global internet traffic stems from bots, with human engagement declining sharply. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X show alarmingly high bot presence; for instance, up to 64% of accounts on X might be bots, and about 9.5% of Instagram accounts are fake or bot-driven.
These bots create, recycle, and manipulate content, causing a flood of synthetic material that undermines authentic human interaction. The internet's original architecture, optimized for human communication, struggles to verify identity and source authenticity, making it vulnerable to this AI-driven takeover. As a result, trust in online content diminishes, quality engagement dwindles, and the internet risks becoming a "closed loop" of digital hallucinations rather than a genuine social space.
Attempts to combat this with detection tools and account verification are being outpaced by advancing AI capabilities, suggesting a fundamental shift in the internet's nature is underway.
