Clockwork Revolution’s Steampunk RPG Ambition

Łukasz Grochal

Clockwork Revolution is a first person steampunk RPG set in the city of Avalon, created by inXile entertainment, the studio known for Wasteland, Torment Tides of Numenera and led by veterans from Fallout and Arcanum. You play Morgan Vanette, a local from the slums of the Tangle who discovers the Chronometer, a device that lets you jump into key moments of Avalon’s past and rewrite them, then return to see how the entire city has shifted.

Choices are meant to go far beyond different lines of dialogue: whole districts, factions and NPCs can change visually and structurally depending on what you did in the past, making reactivity one of the main pillars of the design. It is a full scale RPG with in world character creation, stats that affect how you are “profiled” by a Victorian style machine, and conversations that can push stories into darker or more humane directions. Combat mixes firearms, explosives and gadgets with time manipulation tricks like rewinding events or altering a building’s construction to open new routes. The game’s tone leans into dark humor, class conflict and moral ambiguity, and the writers openly say you can play in very ruthless or “evil” ways and the world will remember and respond to that, rather than steering you back to heroism.

Clockwork Revolution is being built as inXile’s most complex project so far, developed with support from Xbox Game Studios and additional work by Shapeshifter Games, and is planned for Xbox Series X|S, PC and Game Pass, with release still listed only as “in due time”.
