A 2026 Revival: Ghost in the Shell Returns With New Adaptation

Łukasz Grochal

The legendary Ghost in the Shell universe is set to return with a new anime series premiering in January 2026 on Kansai TV and Fuji TV. The production is being handled by Science SARU, widely known for their distinctive animation style seen in works like Dandadan and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. This new series, tentatively titled The Ghost in the Shell, aims to closely follow Masamune Shirow’s original manga and evoke the visual and atmospheric spirit of the classic 1995 anime film.

Directorial duties will be taken on by Mokochan, with acclaimed author EnJoe Toh writing the script and Shuhei Handa overseeing character design. Many fans have expressed hope that the series will honor the original’s cyberpunk mood and musical influence, while also bringing fresh elements fitting a new generation.

Previous adaptations achieved varying degrees of success, but expectations remain high that this version will capture the essence that defined Ghost in the Shell’s impact on sci-fi anime.
