Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace, a former science teacher who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or why he is there. As fragments of memory come back, he slowly realizes that he has been sent on a one way mission to investigate a mysterious microorganism draining energy from the Sun and threatening life on Earth. The film cuts between his present in deep space and key moments on Earth as the global scientific community scrambles to respond, giving the story both an intimate, subjective perspective and a larger sense of planetary stakes.
The turning point of the plot is Grace’s encounter with an alien engineer he nicknames Rocky, another lone survivor whose civilization is facing the same stellar crisis. Their relationship becomes the emotional core of the movie: the two have to build a shared language from scratch, share technology, and learn to trust each other in an environment where any mistake can be fatal. Critics and viewers are repeatedly highlighting how much heart comes from this odd friendship, which starts as a pragmatic alliance and turns into a surprisingly moving bond.
Visually and tonally, Project Hail Mary sits somewhere between The Martian, Interstellar, and Arrival. The direction by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller leans into character driven comedy and warmth without losing the tension of a “save the world” scenario, and Greig Fraser’s cinematography gives the space sequences a grand, almost operatic look. Ryan Gosling’s performance is frequently singled out as a key strength, balancing dry humor, panic, and genuine vulnerability as Grace pieces together what he agreed to sacrifice. On the numbers side, the movie has opened far above studio forecasts, with record previews for 2026 releases and very strong early user scores, which together suggest it could become Amazon MGM’s biggest theatrical hit so far. While some reviews note that it is more emotional than philosophical, the overall consensus is that Project Hail Mary delivers large scale sci fi with a lot of heart and a memorable central duo.
