UnrealRTX: Classic FPS Reborn with RTX Remix Technology

Łukasz Grochal

UnrealRTX is a fan-driven remaster of the classic Unreal (1998) campaign, utilizing NVIDIA's RTX Remix platform. Developed by mstewart401, this overhaul introduces advanced real-time path tracing, global illumination, dynamic shadows, and volumetric lighting, creating a visually rich experience. The mod relies on physically based rendering, giving surfaces realistic reflections, roughness, and depth. Many world objects and textures have been updated with more detail, leveraging AI-assisted tools for reconstruction.

Notably, around 90% of height maps and nearly all emission maps were handcrafted, often using basic software like MS Paint. While multiplayer is not included, the single-player campaign now features enhanced graphics and atmosphere. The mod's initial file size is substantial, with plans for optimization underway.
