Co op, cities, Blackfrost inside The Long Dark 2 sequel

Author: Łukasz Grochal

BLACKFROST: The Long Dark 2 is an upcoming first person survival game and a direct sequel to Hinterland’s The Long Dark, again set in a frozen post blackout Canada after a catastrophic geomagnetic event. The developers describe it as an evolution of the original sandbox, expanding the isolated wilderness formula with larger urban areas, new systems, and optional co-op while still focusing on harsh, slow burn survival. Players will manage classic needs like cold, hunger, and fatigue, but also a new “will to live” mechanic that brings psychological strain into moment to moment decisions.

BLACKFROST is planned as an open ended survival experience with a bigger map that includes the industrial city of Harmont, surrounding wilderness, NPC communities, and new hazards tied to the mysterious radioactive “black frost” leaking from a damaged reactor.

The game is targeting an Early Access launch in 2026, with the team aiming to support it long term alongside the first The Long Dark rather than replacing it.
