Kliff's Journey in Crimson Desert's Epic Open World

Author: Łukasz Grochal

Crimson Desert is shaping up as one of the most anticipated games of 2026, with a release date set for March 19 on PS5 and other platforms. It's an open-world action RPG from Pearl Abyss that dives into a massive fantasy continent called Pywel, where you play as Kliff, a Greymane mercenary navigating power struggles after a king's coma.

Crimson Desert packs a huge open world on the continent of Pywel, full of divided territories and mystical elements like the Abyss, a realm of floating islands dropping magical Abyss Artifacts that grant powers. You step into the boots of Kliff MacTuff, a skilled swordsman from the Greymanes faction, known for helping folks in tough spots. The story kicks off in the bustling town of Hernand, where bandits have taken over spots like markets and ruins. Clear them out, and locals return, unlocking new quests and skills - you can even learn fishing by watching fishermen or pick up enemy moves mid-fight, like a knight's kick.

Combat feels fast and fluid, no strict classes, just a growing moveset from swords, shields, greatswords, spears, axes, and more. Mix quick R1 strikes with heavy R2 slashes, grab and toss foes, parry with timed blocks, or boot them flying. Bosses like Kailock the Hornsplitter test you with agility and magic waves from artifacts, keeping fights intense as enemies swarm smartly. Exploration shines with stamina-based climbing, swimming, sprinting, a summonable horse (one of 29 mounts), and a glider from Abyss tech for safe drops and puzzles involving weightless objects or heavy lifts.

The world boasts insane scale: 575 territories (some sources note 573), 110 factions, 401 creatures, 76 bosses, 467 NPCs with unique stories, 355 crafting materials, 94 collectibles. Pearl Abyss built it on their custom BlackSpace engine, handling blizzards, dense crowds, and seamless streaming for PS5 Pro perks like 4K PSSR, ray-tracing, high CPU for distant views. DualSense adds weighty haptics on parries and adaptive triggers for bows.

Side activities abound - liberate camps, fish, trade, ranch, manage strongholds, send followers on missions, minigames. Leaks and YouTube vids have hyped it as GOTY contender with unique mechanics like skill mimicry and alternate world bleeding in via Abyss. It's single-player, not tied directly to Black Desert Online anymore, focusing on survival, alliances, and personal demons amid villainous grabs for power. Previews after 4-12 hours show it's overwhelming but fun, with dev emphasis on polish.

Expect chaos in combat, freedom to roam vast lands, and depth without buckling under size. Hands-on reports praise life in Hernand alone, hinting at endless secrets. It's got that madcap energy, blending action with light RPG progression via skill trees and item finds.
