Replaced is a 2.5D cinematic action platformer set in an alternate-history, retro-futuristic 1980s America, blending a bleak cyberpunk dystopia with striking pixel art and heavily stylised camera work. Players control R.E.A.C.H., an AI unwillingly trapped in a human body, exploring Phoenix City after a nuclear catastrophe turns society into a corporate-run organ-harvesting nightmare. Previews from Gamescom 2025 highlight a mix of tight platforming, free-roam exploration, and combat inspired by the Batman: Arkham series, with fluid counters, dodges, melee strings, and gunplay that ask for timing rather than button mashing.
The game’s world-building leans on environmental storytelling, with notes, posters, and other fragments fleshing out the city’s history and moral decay, while the moody lighting and layered parallax environments give its pixel art a cinematic, almost hand-animated feel. After several delays partly linked to the studio’s relocation and the ambition of hand-crafted animation, Replaced is now slated for Spring 2026 on PC and Xbox Sering 2026 on PC and Xbox Series X|S, with day-one availability on Game Pass and a recent trailer showcasing refined environments, lighting, and animation polish.
Early impressions are generally positive but cautious: many outlets praise its visual identity and combat potential, while also noting that the final game will have to prove its narrative depth and pacing can match the looks.
