Saros Brings Returnal Style Roguelite Action To PS5

Author: Łukasz Grochal

Saros is the next big project from Housemarque, the studio behind Returnal, and it is shaping up as a single player action roguelite with strong third person shooter roots. Set on the distant world of Carcosa, the story follows Arjun Devraj, a Soltari enforcer sent to investigate a failed off world colony that lives in the shadow of a permanent eclipse. The atmosphere leans into cosmic horror and high tech ruins, with an emphasis on exploration of different biomes that shift between each run.

Gameplay wise, Saros clearly builds on Returnal, but it is not a one to one copy. It keeps the bullet hell shooting, agile dodging, and looping structure, yet the studio openly calls it a roguelite because of its permanent progression systems. After each death, the layout and conditions of Carcosa change, but players retain and upgrade parts of their loadout, armor stats, and perks, which means every failed run should still move you forward. There is also a mix of human Soltari technology and alien Carcosan weaponry, plus modifiers that can make a run harder or easier while affecting enemy toughness.

As for release and platforms, Saros is currently slated for April 30, 2026, after a slight delay from an earlier March window, and will launch on PlayStation 5 with specific enhancements for PS5 Pro. For now, Sony and Housemarque only mention PS5, and available information treats it as a console exclusive, with no confirmed PC or other platforms. Marketing so far has focused on cinematic trailers, a pre order trailer shown at The Game Awards, and a more recent gameplay overview that explains the “come back stronger” design philosophy. Overall, Saros looks like a focused evolution of Housemarque’s formula, trying to stay challenging and replayable without being as punishing as Returnal.
