Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, codenamed Resolute Raccoon, rolls out on April 23, 2026, as the next big long-term support release. Development kicked off early, with key milestones like feature freeze on February 16, UI freeze March 12, beta drop March 23, and final tweaks before launch. This version pushes deeper into Wayland-only territory for smoother graphics, especially on Nvidia gear.

GNOME 50 leads the desktop charge, bringing fresh apps to match its modern vibe. Totem gets swapped for Showtime, a sleek GTK4 video player with immersive controls and libadwaita polish. The old system monitor bows out for Resources, a GNOME Circle tool that tracks hardware usage, lists processes, and handles terminations with solid accessibility baked in.

Performance gets a boost via full amd64v3 package support, optimized for newer x86-64 CPUs without ditching older hardware compatibility. Expect around 1% gains across the board, more in compute-heavy tasks. Users can opt in now on 25.10 previews, but LTS will test everything rigorously.

Other upgrades include better fingerprint logins via SPDM, PipeWire audio packaging tweaks for easier updates, and Snap apps blending deeper into the desktop. Security steps up with post-install disk re-encryption from the Security Center and revamped permission prompts. App Center takes over DEB management, killing off outdated tools like Software Properties.

Installer tweaks improve keyboard nav and screen readers, plus Piper neural speech for Orca. Early snapshots are out for testers in VMs only. Solid LTS expectations all around.
