Model Autophagy Disorder: When AI Trains on Slop

The term “AI slop” has become shorthand for low effort, mass‑produced synthetic content that prioritizes speed, volume and clicks over accuracy, creativity and genuine insight. It covers text, images, video and audio pumped out by generative systems and pushed into feeds, search results and recommendation engines until it turns into a kind of digital clutter that drowns out careful human work. This material often looks polished on the surface but reuses the same patterns, clichés and visual tropes, so it feels shallow even when it technically “passes” as acceptable content.​

In parallel, online culture has picked up the phrase “brainrot” for the way endless trivial or outrage‑bait posts can blunt focus and judgment, and researchers now see a similar effect on large language models trained on viral junk from social platforms. Experiments with models fine‑tuned on highly engaging but low quality threads, memes and clickbait show clear drops in reasoning, factual reliability and coherence, and these deficits only partly recover even after retraining on cleaner data. That creeping decay is one reason a group of scientists described Model Autophagy Disorder” or MAD, the risk that AI systems trained on their own synthetic sludge or on polluted web data gradually collapse into confident nonsense.

It does not mean all AI output is worthless, but it underlines how much depends on curation, transparency and active resistance to the temptation of cheap automated filler.​
