Subnautica 2 Multiplayer: Optional Co-Op Details

Łukasz Grochal

Subnautica 2 is gearing up for an early access launch sometime in 2026 on PC, Xbox, and likely other platforms too. The devs at Unknown Worlds just dropped their fifth dev vlog, spotlighting the new optional multiplayer that's got everyone talking. It's co-op for up to four players, with full crossplay support across PC, Xbox, and more, including handhelds like Steam Deck and ROG Ally. You can invite friends to drop into your solo world anytime or kick off a fresh multiplayer session, no strings attached. Importantly, everything stays fully playable alone, keeping that core isolation vibe fans love from the originals. No forced co-op moments here; solo players won't miss out on any content.

They demoed smooth drop-in/drop-out mechanics and even showed off a cool new gadget: the dive elevator. This lets you ride down to deep spots with buddies (or solo) and haul loot back up easily. Other fresh tech includes the Biopod for creature handling and a NoA terminal, hinting at expanded building and exploration options in a whole new alien ocean world. Multiplayer builds on fan requests but doesn't mess with the single-player purity.

Amid some past drama with the publisher, the team stresses balance: play isolated first, then replay with pals. Expect more biomes, creatures, craftables, and narrative layers as early access rolls out, with major updates planned.
