Windrose Preview: Co Op Pirate Survival On The Seas

Author: Łukasz Grochal

Windrose is a pirate themed open world survival game that leans into cooperative PvE rather than competitive multiplayer, putting you in the role of an up and coming captain in an alternate Age of Piracy. The core loop is pretty classic for the genre: you explore a large, procedural world made up of islands and ocean, gather materials, craft tools and weapons, and gradually turn a modest camp into a fortified pirate base while upgrading your ship from a basic vessel into a serious war machine or a nimble explorer. Combat borrows some light Soulslike ideas with stamina management, dodge rolls and parries, and there are tougher boss style encounters that demand a bit more preparation than regular mobs.

You can play completely solo, host your own co-op session, or join friends, since the game is designed as a buy to play PvE experience with support for offline play and dedicated servers. On Steam the title is marked as “coming soon,” but there is a free demo that offers roughly four to six hours of content across three early game islands and has already attracted a sizeable playerbase and strong user reviews, while also surfacing some criticism around grind, inventory space and mission flow that the team is still addressing.
